The University of Alicante has received the "Spatineo Quality Awards" Award for spatial data infrastructures (IDEs) at the international conference JIIDE 2020 (Iberian Conference on Spatial Data Infrastructures) that took place in Portugal the week of October 26-30. This award is sponsored by Spatineo, an expert European entity in offering SaaS (Software as a Service) products that facilitate availability monitoring, usage analysis, performance tests and quality of geospatial web services, being specialized in international standards of most important geographic information: OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) and INSPIRE.
With this award, the SIGUA (Geographic Information System of the University of Alicante) has been distinguished with the second prize in the general category in "Quality of Spatial Services", sharing this honor with other entities of great experience and prestige in this type services, such as the Ministry of Agriculture; Fishing and Food or the Junta de Castilla y León, among others. The criteria for its award have been the quality of its services, its high performance and the great speed of response of the information offered from SIGUA, whose data infrastructure is based on the European INSPIRE directive and OGC standards. The merit of receiving this recognition from the organizing company, based in Finland, is even greater if one considers that more than 1,400 data infrastructure projects and services from Spain and Portugal have been evaluated for concession.
SIGUA began in 1997 at the current Interuniversity Institute of Geography with the vocation of public service, having as a premise the use of international standards and spatial interoperability protocols that guarantee open communication between systems. SIGUA is currently a benchmark in space management and has been a model on which other public bodies have been inspired. The technical staff of SIGUA, attached to the Vice-Rector's Office for Campus and Technology, develops their work in the Geomatics Laboratory of the aforementioned research institute, highlighting their high degree of specialization in geographic information technologies and, in a very special way, in the publication of interactive cartography and the use of spatial databases.
