Academic discipline and current profession:
Geographer. Professor and researcher

University of origin:
National University of Cuyo-Mendoza, Argentina

Period of stay in the IIG:
March 2019

  • What is your academic background and professional experience?

I am geographer specialized in Territorial Planning, Comprehensive Risk Management and Disaster Management at the National University of Cuyo, in Argentina. I have also specialized in Risks at the National University of Colombia. At this moment I am PhD student in Geography (Medical Geography and Health). I have worked as a consultant performing Environmental Impact Assessments, advising on the subject of risks and the environment. I am professor at the National University of Cuyo, in Argentina, at Degrees on Geography and Tourism. In addition, I work as a researcher at the Institute of Geography in CONICET and UNCuyo.

  • How did you find the Interuniversity Institute of Geography of the University of Alicante?

Through the official websites of the Spanish universities, among which the UA highlighted, and I once inside the web I found the UA, and within it I found the Interuniversity Institute of Geography profile and its activities carried out.

  • What motivated your stay at the Interuniversity Institute of Geography of the University of Alicante?

The National University of Cuyo promotes academic teaching mobility through a process of application and evaluation of work plan. I chose the Interuniversity Institute of Geography because it fitted with my research expectations and also for its research experience. In addition, from the first contact via email, the staff always expressed openness and predisposition, which is very important to make a stay in a foreigner institution.

  • What research project did you develop during your stay?

During the stay you can advance in my doctoral thesis on Medical and Health Geography called: "Environmental factors that influence the distribution of Clostridium botulinum spores in soils, and its link with infant botulism in Mendoza." I was also able to hold conferences in the Master of Planning and Management of Natural Risks and in Geography and Territory Planning Degree. I have the opportunity to collect bibliographic material and develop methodological analysis.

  • To what extent were the technical facilities and the work team of the Institute useful for the development of your research?

Technical facilities are excellent and first level and this facilitates the research task. Nevertheless, what I have valued the most is the work team: a receptive and collaborative work environment, colleagues were waiting for me and I had permanent contact with my tutor, Prof. Antonio M. Rico (the Director of the Institute). I also want to emphasize the camaraderie and the attention I received from the first day until the end of my stay from the administrative procedures to the researchers, but also through the technician person in charge of the scientific journal edited by the Institute, and the professors of the Department of Geography. In short, I felt at home, in a very comfortable work environment. In my professional life, I do not just evaluate the quality of the services for the development of the research, but also the human quality of the work team, and here I can say that it is excellent.

  • What is your assessment of the educational and recreational offer offered by the university campus?

The educational and recreational activity offered by the campus is excellent. All facilities work properly and provide very good service. Personally I have used many of them: availability of Wi-Fi throughout the campus, access to libraries, both the general and the specific faculties or the food in the socials clubs facilities. I have also been able to access sports services within the campus in which I performed various physical activities. If I could repeat this experience, it would undoubtedly be in the Interuniversity Institute of Geography of the University of Alicante.
